Overcoming the deadliness of sin in the covenant <Ex 34:10-17; Heb 8:8-12>

Read: <Ex 34:10-17>

10 Then the LORD said: "I am making a covenant with you. Before all your people I will do wonders never before done in any nation in all the world. The people you live among will see how awesome is the work that I, the LORD, will do for you.

11 Obey what I command you today. I will drive out before you the Amorites, Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites.

12 Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going, or they will be a snare among you.

13 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and cut down their Asherah poles.

14 Do not worship any other god, for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

15 "Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land; for when they prostitute themselves to their gods and sacrifice to them, they will invite you and you will eat their sacrifices.

16 And when you choose some of their daughters as wives for your sons and those daughters prostitute themselves to their gods, they will lead your sons to do the same.

17 "Do not make cast idols.

1. Be careful not to make a treaty with those who live in the land where you are going

1) Or they will be a snare among you

2) The deadliest of all is sin

3) Break down, smash and cut down the idols

4) Do not prostitute yourselves to the world

Read: <Heb 8:8-12>

8 But God found fault with the people and said: "The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

9 It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they did not remain faithful to my covenant, and I turned away from them, declares the Lord.

10 This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.

11 No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the Lord,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.

12 For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."

2. But we won’t be able to understand the extent of knowing and obeying the above unless we understand the evidences brought about by the new covenant.

1) While the law was “holy, righteous and good”, it could not in itself empower obedience.

2) They did not continue in His covenant, and the Lord disregarded them

3) Through the Holy Spirit, Christ’s death cleanses our conscience and gives a regenerated heart.

4) All believers can have greater access to revelation (God’s word) and being gifted for ministry (Holy Spirit).

5) Love the Law-giver, the man will obey the law and be faithful to the covenant.
