Our History and Vision

"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes; first for the Jew, then for the Gentile"
~ Romans 1:16 ~

Our History : At the Beginning

The Life Church and Missions was a result of a shared vision of a group of ordinary Christians. This group of Christians grew up in a traditional church, but they saw the failings of the traditional church in sustaining its church members' "first love" for God. While serving actively and fervently in their former church ministries, they felt spiritually dry. Although they knew that they are children of God, they could not fully grasp the understanding of the joy and love promised by God. It was a struggle to enjoy Christian living as well as serving the living God.

It was not until 1998 when a missionary from South Korean, Rev Lee Chull, came into their lives and changed their perspectives of what it meant to be a Christian. Led by this vision to "gospelize", first, in their individual lives, then within their families and immediate region and then to the world as the ultimate goal, this group of less than 20 Christians (most of them in their 20s) were given no choice by their traditional church but were forced to leave on 21 Jan 2001. Although this move led much to the displeasure of many of their church leaders, it was a God-driven breakthrough from the old traditional church which God prepared for these believers.

Undaunted by the persecutions of their church leaders, this group of Christians left their established church to join a small church totally unheard of by the community. This small church was none other than ‘The Life Church and Missions’, headed by a local pastor and Rev Lee. The worship venue was at a small, humble "store room" in a building surrounded by Chinese temples and brothels in Aljunied, along the stretch of Geyland Road. The new congregation comprised mainly the Pastors' families and a few friends. Despite the small congregation which numbered less than 30, everyone could enjoy God's messages and visions prayed through by the servant of God, Rev Lee. This was because the church was guided neither by man nor by human’s efforts but by the God-driven principle of “You will be my witnesses till the ends of the world when the Holy Spirit comes on you” .

In July 2001, Rev Lee was called to leave Singapore to provide pastoral care to the growing number of Chinese in Washington DC, USA. The Life Church and Missions was left under the leadership of the local pastor. During this time, the pastor continued to lead Sunday Worships and meetings. Brother Vincent had to take over the role of translating the Sunday Message in Mandarin.

The church experienced a gradual spiritual decline after the departure of Rev Lee. Members could not find power and strength to live a blessed schedule in their everyday lives with the Sunday messages. The weekly meetings went back to the old way of injecting man’s effort in Christian living and ministries. The local pastor also embarked on evangelical movements which many church members were not ready for. The small group leaders then prayed regarding this matter and brought this issue of the members' spiritual well-being to the pastor. It was at these meetings that it was realized that the vision, timetable as well as the evangelical ministries of the local pastor and that of the small group were not in sync.

The small group leaders' main concern was to feed the spiritual hunger of its members and build up their foundation in Jesus Christ. With that, they will receive power to testify the Lord and God-driven evangelism will naturally rise up as happened in the book of Acts. The local pastor’s focus was however largely on explicit evangelism into the field, failing to connect field gospelization to the church members’ ability to enjoy the Emmanuel God of whom many are sheep of God still very much burdened with their spiritual and individual problems. With relentless advocating of evangelical activities without emphasizing the healing and leading of the Emmanuel God, the church membership of 30 eventually shrank to less than 20. Regular church members began to stop attending worship service. Church attendance dropped to an all-time low. Eventually, this difference in vision, timetable and the perception of God-driven ministries led the local pastor to step down as the church president as well as to relinquish his pastoral position in November 2002.

Taking another leap, in uncharted waters of faith

The small group leaders prayed on this matter and sought the advice of Rev Lee in USA. With Rev Lee's blessing, the small group leaders, led by Brother Wengang and Brother Vincent found strength in the Lord to restore the church of God. They were faced with the challenge to find a new premise for worship for 20 over members. The first few Sunday worships in November 2002 were held at Brother Wengang's flat in Simei. God answered our prayers when He blessed us with a seminar room of a comfortable size in a 3-star hotel, where we subsequently held our weekly meetings.

On top of Sunday worships, prayer meetings and discipleship training sessions are the next most important focus of the church’s dynamics. This emphasis on prayer meetings is based on the belief of the need for lively communication with God to discover how God is always ardently working among us. Our focus on prayers is so that the church will always be God-driven and be able to test and approve God’s good, pleasing and perfect will among us. The discipleship training was in place so that the church could be healed and equipped with the knowledge and power of the gospel to face our spiritual adversaries, overcome all our individual problems and to testify the word and doings of our Lord Jesus Christ to the many helpless and harassed souls that we encounter in our fields.

Other than the immediate problem of a new venue, the separation from the local pastor also meant that the church was left without a pastor. It was then that we understood God's plan to raise Brother Vincent up to be the church’s pastor. All those times when he was a translator for the Sunday messages and when he led small groups in Bible studies, God has been training him for a greater purpose. This purpose came to light when the church needed a pastor. As the church was still small with constraints of all kinds in providing for a full-time pastor, Brother Vincent had to juggle between his full-time job as well as the ministering of the word, while Brother Wengang took on the role of overseer.

Spurred on by firm convictions that God is taking care of the church despite the challenges and conditions we were faced with, we saw God slowly answering our prayers, one by one. In January 2004, Brother Vincent resigned from his job and became our full-time pastor. Through understudying God’s servant, Rev Lee who is designated in USA, Brother Vincent delivered the word of God faithfully and shepherded the Singapore church according to God-given vision, timetable and guidance.

With the blessings of God through the leadership of Brother Vincent and his 7 deacons, our church expanded, slowly but surely, from above 20 members to more than 40 members. Within a year, God also gave us the resources needed to move to a new worship venue, which we could call our own. We leased an office space in a shop-house in Kallang which could accommodate up to 60 people. With the increased number of children among us, a cry-room was also constructed for the convenience of not only the mothers and their babies, but also the rest of the church members.

 Who we are?

We aren't extra-ordinary people, with neither the fame, fortune nor status that this world will love to boast. We like to be known as God's blessed remnants for this 21st Century - "Ordinary" folks living "extra-ordinary" lives with the assurance of God's covenants to us as we shine for Him in our various fields. We believe that every promise of God in the Bible is for every child of God. Therefore, the confirmations of these promises remain our key messages and testimonies. Though we are currently a small independent church, we love all the churches of Christ and hope to be a great blessing to them. Our prayer is also that we can bless the churches and leaders whom God had used to bless us before.

With a current congregation of about 50, the brothers and sisters of this church come from myriad family backgrounds; each with their unique personalities, each with their stories to share. We have our share of exuberant and reserved members, so it will not be difficult to get comfortable and adjust to us. Most of us are young working adults in our 20s and early 30s. Amongst us are also parents of middle age, little kids ranging from less than 1 year old to students still in schools and universities.

Even within our small congregation, our church experience challenges of all kinds. Through these challenges, we understand God's plan for us to grow spiritually and to be a witness for Him in this world of problems. Each time we are faced with problems and challenges, we present them before God. One by one, we see them being answered and fulfilled according to God's most wonderful plan and timing.

Despite our differences, we are a spiritual family in Christ, inter-connected not by human efforts but by the power of the promises and love of the Emmanuel God. We pray too that you could join in our family and grow in blessedness with us.

"so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others"
~ Romans 12:5 ~
